Union soldiers of Brigadier General John Gibbon's division of Major General Winfield S Hancock's II Corps, repelling an attack by Confederate General Robert E Lee's forces. The battle ended in a Confederate victory with the Union army suffering heavy casualties in frontal assaults against fortified Confederate positions.
