The British successfully broke through the German lines in Artois at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915 but were unable to exploit the situation due to poor communications and a shortage of artillery shells. Ultimately the British and Indians took approximately 2 kilometres of ground at a cost of 11,200 troops.
