Noted for his prowess as a gunfighter, Hickock was a target for men eager to gain the reputation of being the one to have killed him. He was murdered on 2 August 1876, by Jack McCall, who walked into the saloon in Deadwood, South Dakota, where Hickock was playing poker, and shot him in the back of the head.
