Instituted 15 November 1878 by Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter. (1903 1918 issue). Constructed of gilded silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a raised leftward facing profile of Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with an inscription of FR VERDIENST UM DIE KUNST (FOR MERIT IN THE ARTS), unmarked, measuring 29. 62
