Castelnau (1851 1944) was a leading exponent of the 'offensive spirit' which dominated France's strategy and tactics in the war until the dismissal of Robert Nivelle as French Commander in Chief in 1917. He commanded the French Second Army in its unsuccessful attempt to recapture the province of Lorraine in the early stages of the war.
