Cecilia Metella was the daughter of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Creticus, who was Roman Consul in 69 BC. She was also the daughter in law of Triumvir Marcus Licinius Crassus. Her husband, Marcus Licinius Crassus the Younger, built this mausoleum for her on a hill overlooking the Appian Way.
