Germany, Imperial. A Desk Ornament Carved by a German POW in Malta, c. 1917 Auction 1943 as General der Infanterie(Grabenkunst Schreibtischdekoration). Constructed of lacquered dark brown wood, consisting of a sphere emanating from a cascading stem, bearing hand painted imagery of tents amid trees and building, topped by a German national eagle, in turn affixed to a flattened base of identical construction, bearing dates 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917, interspersed with an inscription of MALTA KRIEGSGEFANGENEN=LAGER, the base showing a rivet securing the finial in place
