Circa 1970s, its made of cast brass, hollow on the interior so that the ends of whatever it's holding can slip down inside. This one's definitely seen some use, especially on the top, but the sides are still pretty shiny and its got many years of use in it yet. I believe the whole bottom used to be covered in paper, which is partially torn
